Gregory J. Johnson was born and raised in Detroit, educated in the Detroit Public School System, and received both bachelor and master’s degrees from Wayne State University. His military service includes two tours in Germany as an army medic (Berlin, 1975-78) and NATO communications-electronics officer for air defense systems Europe (Spangdahlem, Kaiserslautern; 1982-86).

 Prior to entering education, Gregory worked for the Internal Revenue Service; was an insurance salesman, and did corporate security work.

 Gregory entered the Detroit Public School System after beginning his teaching career,  and as an eleventh grade English teacher, at Detroit’s Henry Ford High School, Gregory served as a DFT building representative, DFT executive board member, and was a three-time elected delegate to both state and national conventions. 

In addition to his duties as DFT executive vice president, Gregory serves on the state federation’s (AFT-Michigan) administrative board.
